Hiya. Just wanted to say that I posted your submission on the site along with one other that came in. Here's to many more.

Thanks heaps,

Angela

Dear Musos:

Summer means fun, so Weirdo Records is holding a bad song contest.

To compete simply send in your bad song. It can be submitted on any
recorded format. Reels, 2-track tape, 16rpm lps, wax cylinders, beta
tapes, etc are perfectly welcome alongside more popular formats. If you
prefer you may also submit a score or even some mere rough chord
charts/lyrics/directions.

It's completely up to you to decide why the song is bad. Perhaps you
know a creepy song that's quite fascinating. Perhaps there's an
especially annoying song you find very intensely mediocre. Perhaps you
know one that unduly pushes the limits of what could be called a song.
Or you may think some entangled aesthetic combination of all of the
above. The song does not necessarily have to be written/recorded by you,
although originality is a factor of the judging process.

Submissions must be recieved at Weirdo by September 1st, 2008 & will not
be returned. Qualifications, disqualifications, & other decisions are
entirely at the discretion of Weirdo. However please note that your
comments are more than welcome & all submissions will be given due
consideration.

The winner of the contest will receive a $50 gift certificate to Weirdo,
so be sure to include your contact info along with your submission.
Winner, runners up & honorable mentions will be posted on the website as
they come in for all to see, hear, & guffaw over. The winner will be
announced on the Weirdo email list & posted promptly upon the end of the
submission period.

What are you waiting for?

Send your submission to:

The most overrated albums of all time

"a work of extraordinary emotional depth from a former Beach Boy wrestling with alcohol problems."

He's only a "former" Beach Boy by virtue of being dead, right? I mean, did he leave the Beach Boys during his lifetime?  Certainly not prior to the recording of "Pacific Ocean Blue"

I was glad to see Pearl Jam on the list. I'd like to nominate everything grunge ever done. Not only did grunge derail hair metal, technical guitar playing, and even mainstream hard rock bands like Guns and Roses and Van Halen, it did huge damage to pop music, and lyric writing in general. For years all nearly all pop songs contained vague lyrics about how fucking distressed I am.  Girlfriends, grandparents, nieces, nephews, neighbors, barbers, bakers, bankers and pharmacists... the entire human family disappeared from songs, the only subject left was me and my tortured, inarticulate soul.

Rock music as a whole was pulverized in Olympia, and didn't really come back until around 1997.  The damage started with punk rock (I took part in that particular assault on quality and taste) - so there wasn't really much good music from 1982 on for the next 15 years. Pretty depressing.

It should be no surprise that McCready was channeling KISS - to me Nirvana and ilk always seemed like the 2nd coming of Black Oak Arkansas.  Indeed, Novaselic wrote in his book that they were trying to merge Black Flag with Black Sabbath, that this was some kind of transgressive act.  Shoot, I remember punk bands covering Black Sabbath in 1984 - and it already sucked, and that never changed.  From Black Flag to Black Sabbath - creatively covering all the bases from A to B, from Henry Rollins waving his tiny, shrivelled little dick in front of people, to Ozzy Osbourne biting (and getting bitten by) a bat on stage.  Fuck them all.

yup. It's [Sgt Pepper] certainly not the best Beatles album by a
longshot, but it was pretty groundbreaking at the time. So many of
their other albums though - Revolver, the 'white album', Hard Day's
Night just to name a few - are so much better all around, but Sgt
Pepper always gets the big ups.

I also definitely agree with their number two choice, Daydream Nation,
as I recently mentioned here already.

Kinda funny to see the Dennis Wilscon Pacific Ocean Blue album there
after all its recent mention here. I've never been much of a Beach
Boys fan at all though, so I really have no comment on this either
way.

[Zebra_Trucks] Fwd: A cry for help from a muscular and nearly nude woman!

I don't know if this has anything to do with the Tropicana or not.  Did The Von Foxies ever play the Tropicana?  I doubt it.  But I think we are all in favor of strong women and want to support them.  Info on how to do that follows PSA numbers 1 and 2, directly below.

Two other notes, with slightly marginally stronger Tropicana connections:

1. I played a radio show in Portland on Saturday with my old friend and Wimps fan Ricardo Wang, and my once alienated, now cheerfully reunited daughter Olivia Love.  You can hear the ramshackle but spirited outcome at:

http://archive.kpsu.org/station/archives/245

We did a version of Cast A Shadow modeled closely after the Waiters (my Canadian/Brazilian band) arrangement, and we played Strumpet by Lois.  We double the listeners pleasure on that one by playing it in two keys simultaneously!

Download it for free - good value for your money

2.  My literary efforts, (dwarfed as they are in both size and quality by the work Karen Vargas, Wimp,  is doing - have you followed her career?  Holy Guacamole!), but anyway, back to me - my literary efforts limp on, like a metaphor with a metaphor with a stone in it's hoof.

Visit http://www.smithmag.net/sixwordbook/ and be amazed.

Anybody up for another Tropicana reunion?

Lou needs our help. Mama has entered a contest, and

So help her out, take five minutes out of your day

[Zebra_Trucks] More Spam From The Wimp!

For fans of: Joy Division, Toby Keith, Olympia and Brazilian twee,
especially Beat Happening, train wrecks, rubbernecking automobile
accidents, chasing fire trucks!

*****
To my dear friends, all over the world:

Some of you may be aware that my daughter and I had been alienated for
six years. Some of you may not have even been aware that I am a
parent, so profound was my shame and grief at the role my failures as
a human being and a parent played in the breakdown of this most
important relationship, I may have overlooked mentioning that little
fact to you.

Well, no more! Today I am here full of piss and vinegar to announce
that she and I are back in email contact, and will soon see each other
face-to-face. In fact, I couldn't think of a better way to come back
together than to do a live radio show in Portland, after a single
rehearsal with most (but not all) of a band of musical specialists who
have never played as a unit before, including some of the old songs we
haven't done in a decade or so, and some new songs that have never
been performed live.

Does this sound like a recipe for disaster to you, too? The beginning
of another six years of cold war, maybe? If you like that sort of
thing (and it's a known fact that many homo sapien do like that sort
of thing, a great deal; consider the success of the movies The
Towering Inferno and Titanic, for example), at noon Saturday Pacific
Time - that's 4:00 pm Sao Paulo time, 9:00 PM in Paris, 10:00 PM
Athens (Greece) and 3:00 PM in Athens (Georgia) go to
http://kpsu.org/listen and listen live! (Give or take an hour on
those times, I tried to factor in daylight savings time, but it hurts
my feelings).

For a second opinion on this show, here's unindicted (as yet) musical
co-conspirator Jim McAdams take on the show:

Here's the basic run-down on the Olympia band That Stupid Love
Experience having their reunion on 5/24/08 on What's This Called? with
guest DJ Ferris manning the booth:

That Stupid Love Experience was an experimental indie folk pop group
formed in the late '90s from members of two Olympia bands - That
Stupid Club (an experimental grunge/noise rock group) and The Kelsie
Love Experience (a folk pop group centered around pre-teen and then
teenage prodigy vocalist Kelsie Love). The group name, just like it's
members, came from half of each separate band. While certainly an
all-in-fun agenda prevailed, this was Kelsie's first real "rock" band,
and later she would go on to change her name to Olivia and become
vocalist for the popular NW all-female Black Sabbath tribute group
Pink Sabbath.

It's been ten years since That Stupid Love Experience has played
together and in recent years any sort of reunion seemed completely
impossible as band members Kelsie (now Olivia) and her father Matt
Love had a falling out. Time thankfully is a wonderful healer, and
recently when former vocalist/moog player Ricardo Wang had made plans
to book Matt for a solo set on his KPSU show it came out that Olivia
might sit in. Soon Ricardo was dusty off his trusty moog, and making
calls with the new invention of cellular phones to other former band
members. To avoid a conflict of interest, Ricardo enlisted the help
of KPSU's most noted interviewer DJ Ferris to take over the radio host
duties.

Times (and names) have changed, and three quarters of this particular
line-up is now married to new people, with weird things happening in
their lives like careers and children. The group still knows how to
mix covers from the likes of Beat Happening and Joy Division with
originals about schizophrenics and creepy deadhead misogynists,
however. This set is dedicated to Matt Loves good friend and musical
cohort Joe Sibley who took his own life a year ago.

[Zebra_Trucks] My Dream Summer Vacation...

On Edmonton AM this morning they asked their listeners to describe their dream summer vacation:

I sent them this email:

My Dream Summer vacation... I already had it - last winter! I traveled from Edmonton to Sao Paulo, Brazil, met some long time virtual friends of mine face-to-face the first time, and played a live show at the Bar B club. It was really, really fun and rewarding.

All my friends are envious, and want to go, and it suggests a whole new line of work for me - maybe I shouldn't be telling you this until I get set up, but here goes - you take all of us rock and roll wannabees and never weres, dump them in an exotic location, and et them put on a show with local talent. Combine rock and roll fantasy camps with adventure travel.  I've already done it once, so I know the ropes.

Summer seems like an ideal time to do it - in winter we went from 40 below to 40 above - it was too much - winters there are mild, so it would be nice to go there during our summer.

here's music from our final rehearsal:

Bossa nova: the coolest sound under the sun

I think Joyce takes a narrow view.  The US-backed dictatorship was monstrous, of course, and certainly put the country on a different track than it would have been on.  Maybe as a result the music is different than it would have been.

Perhaps without Reagan and Thatcher we would have had 35 unbroken years of prog rock dominance in the US and England.  To some people that would be good.  For lovers of the Sex Pistols and the Clash and all that followed, not so good.

I totally revere the indie rock scene in Brazil.  Check out Lulina at http://tramavirtual.uol.com.br/artista.jsp?id=6754 - great songs to listen to, and tons of free downloads if you join (free).  Then check out the thousands and thousands of other bands on the tramavirtual site.

Brazil has huge problems, but there is also much to be excited about, and not all of it is bossa nova!

On Fri, May 9, 2008 at 7:27 AM, Telstar wrote:

"Bossa nova is a vision of Brazil as it should have been," says the singer
Joyce, who is organising a bossa nova 50th birthday concert at the Barbican
that will feature the style's originators and its new exponents. "We should
have been a wonderful, democratic country. Instead we had 21 years of
military dictatorship, something we are still paying for. So bossa nova
represents a different way of life; a culture more sophisticated than the
one we have today."
