Those Happy Golden Punk Rock Years Pt. 1

It may have been Halloween, 1984, the way I remember it is like this. It as an old two or three story house in Tacoma.

I don't remember anything about playing that show, or most other times. I guess I would have said Wimps played 5 or 6 shows until I saw the list Ron and Mike compiled... many, many gigs, most weekends, sometimes more than once a weekend. After I saw the list, I remembered a few more shows. I still don't remember playing this one at all... I think we must have, I don't know why I would have been there otherwise. I do remember feeling sick and tired and wanting to go home, with no way to get there. There were two choices, being inside the house where it was freezing and noisy, or going outside the house, where it was even colder, frost on the ground, and slightly quieter.

I believe the band that was playing was called The Crypt Kicker Five, but I wouldn't swear to it. I wouldn't swear they played Monster Mash, either, but I seems like they did. I do remember they played Black Sabbath covers, seemingly with no intended irony, and I felt like I was a long way from home that they would do something so rockist (it was later when that sort of thing became cute to do in Olympia).

I was in a bedroom - the bed was piled up with people's coats, and had that familiar smell from back in those days - the smell of things that haven't been washed for months, if ever. I covered myself in people's coats, my throbbing head clutched between my hands, curled up in a foetal position, the wall thumping my back - thump, thump, thump in sync with the music as the band played "Iron Man."

I spent about 2 years there that night, waiting, waiting for it to be over, surrounded by a much rougher crowd than I was used to back home... thump, thump, thump against my spine...

I was always sleep deprived back in those days, I ate aspirin like candy, every day, I worked 8 - 5 at the state (Dolly Parton complained about 9 - 5, it would have been paradise to get a paid lunch, and get another hour of sleep in the morning). There was an infant back home at the house, so there was no rest there, with a mentally ill mother, it always made me feel uneasy to be away at all.

I wanted shows to start on time, and go the hell home when it was over. It never happened that way, of course.

There was the show at Anacortes. I don't remember much about playing that one either. The way it usually went was the show was supposed to start at 9:00 with the Wimps opening. 9:00 would come and of course there was nobody there. Somebody would come around, "oh, could you wait for a while before you start playing? There's nobody here."

Well yeah, I happened to notice that myself. I'd like to play for actual people, so sure.

Could you start at 10:00 pm?

Sure.

10:00, 10:30, 11:00, 11:30... people have been trickling in, until there's a fair crowd, I'm ready to start, but for some reason, still, nothing is happening. Maybe half the band has gone off to Safeway, and didn't tell anybody. Maybe the promoter is off somewhere getting high. Who knows?

11:45, OK, you guys hurry up, get on stage you have 15 minutes. As usual, I'm very stressed - tired, sick, stage fright pounding me, humiliation (I'm using Bryan Learned's amp. Hey, Bry, where do you plug into this thing? Um, how do you turn it on? Where's the volume?), and I'm seething at the promoter.

But I remember how amazingly assertive Curt was for a guy who chose to name the band Wimps. I think we did our whole set, which was perhaps 40 minutes at that point. He would just get on with it, despite the guys standing in front of the stage and wildly making "get off the stage" signals, he's smile and nod "ok, ok, just one more song..." and we'd launch into another one.

I remember the incident when Heather defused violence by kissing that guy (just like the Hendrix song) that Tobi wrote about in the Beat Happening box set liner notes, I wasn't more than 6 feet away.

Finally, hours and hours later, the show breaks up and we're ready to go home. We were actually paid for this gig, the princely sum of $50.00, so we each got a little over $8 dollars... it would be $8.33 if we split it up evenly, and I think that somebody went to the trouble of doing this (I've made more than that for playing twice since. Wait, three times). I turned my share over to the driver for gas.

Just as we're getting in the car, a band of local lad swarmed us. I swing around, adopting a wide stance. I had no idea what I was gonna do, I knew nothing about fighting. I don't remember what happened next, somehow the situation played itself out without a fight. Curt probably talked them out of it, he had great people skills in situations like this. I didn't really appreciate this at the time, but since then I've come to understand how many things worked out for the better with Curt in charge of the negotiations.

It was a station wagon, I remember this because I took the way back so I could curl up in a foetal position, my throbbing head clutched between my hands.

We stopped for gas or a piss break or something. Candice asked me something, but my ears were still ringing, and I could hardly believe what I thought I heard her say.

"What's that?" I asked, "Do I have a big dick?"

"No, I said 'Do you want to have a picnic!'"

One time I was talking to my friend Travis about Calvin Johnson, and I was saying "goddam that Calvin Johnson this and goddam that Calvin Johnson that" and he said did you hear about Calvin's terrible car accident, he almost died!"

And I felt bad about badmouthing him.

Another time I was talking to Travis about Eli Sterling, and i was going "goddam that Eli Sterling for this and that" and he said "Did you hear about Eli falling off that 50 foot ladder? It nearly killed him!"

And I felt bad all over again.

Now I'm not privy to any inside information here, but maybe one of your several thousand readers will write you in the next few minutes and say "Bob, did you hear that Lucinda Williams has Alzheimer's disease, just like Glen Campbell?"

and then it will be your turn to feel bad. Just sayin. Just sayin there might be a good reason for her to keep a book of lyrics open in front of her when she's performing.

I never quite understood the value placed on pop musicians memorizing all that material. We don't expect classical musicians do be able to do that. It blows my mind that Yes memorized the entire contents of Tales From Topographic Oceans. I assume this piece as put together from many tiny pieces (like other albums of theirs from that period) and then they learned it to take it on the road. That's an achievement nobody seems to value; nobody seems to value much of anything Yes ever did, these days. But anyway...

Yes, Lucinda has a music stand, with a book, she turns the page for every number. Live performance is not only what you hear, but what you see, you've got to sell the song, it's about the experience, it's not a recital. And this was incredibly off-putting until I noticed the guitarist was suddenly duplicating the exact same tone and feel as "Wicked Game". Felice even leaned over and commented on it.

Sometimes a player is so good, he makes the whole show. You marvel at his excellence. And too often players today are about flash, as if the goal is to go to Guitar Center and wow their peers as opposed to actually playing satisfying, listenable music. But this guy added flavor, he was truly accompanying Lucinda, and what he wrung from his axe was positively mesmerizing.

He used to be in Dawes, when it was called Simon Dawes. He came out on stage with them when they played the Santa Monica Pier. But that show was more bombastic, it had more wailing. Whereas Saturday night, opening for Henley, Lucinda Williams's show was more about groove, about feel.

Blake surely made the guitar cry and sing, but he did more than that, it was like he was populating a whole classroom with the sounds he got out.

It's funny. After the boy bands, after the dominance of MTV, after the earth has been scorched, there's a generation that's all about the basics, writing and playing. It's not about outfits, it's not simply about getting rich, it's about the music.

Everything's been high concept for so long, everybody with any skill has become a producer, working behind the scenes propping up no-talents, it's rare to see someone with talent out there up front, putting the music first.

We've heard too much about how these household names are truly talented. Did you see Justin Timberlake at the piano? How about Justin Bieber on the drums! But they evidence a rudimentary skill, far from genius, and Timberlake is now an actor and soon Justin Bieber will be a has-been. Blake Mills is an anti-star, like the heroes of yore. He doesn't dress up in outfits concocted by Rachel Zoe, he wears the same clothes he does off stage and the music is his calling card. It's enough, more than enough. Watch out.

I don't know the Mobster Band, but I suspect they meant they don't want somebody who is drug addicted to the point that they are unreliable, and end up dead when they should be doing their best work. I lived in Canada for four years, and I heard public radio slip slidin from pretty good to being the same sort of vapid propaganda I get in US radio. The Age of Persuasion had all the warts airburshed out, I can assure you - just like Marketplace airburshes out all the pain of our financial collapse, and does comedy routines about things that destroy lives. Talk to a guy who directs 600 commercials a year, and of course he's say everybody just wants to have bucks. The same kind of people you talk to everyday, who come to the same conclusion.

We reported that Alzbuzzabob had joined our newly signed band, the Icehole Sailors as the group's new lead guitarist and lead singer.

Citing creative differences, Alzbuzzabob has decided to not join the line up after all. In a prepared statement, the guitarist and vocalist explained the reasons behind his decision: "ur music really really really sucks,, and i cant support a band that sucks as much as u guys,,, I could careless what u say or do u suck and will always suck fuk off and die."

A spokesman for the band reports they are confused and devastated by this turn of events, but they are determined to carry on, and will renew the search for a new frontman.

We regret the way events have unfolded, and the prematurity of our previous announcement.

They don't know how to record guitars any more in rock music, I said. Guitars in country music sound like they did in rock music in the 70s, I said.

It's probably no accident that this videomaker chose That 70s Show for the images, even though it has nothing to do with the trappings (cowboy boots, trucks, etc) of country music.

Too many people who would like this album will never hear it.

You see country is the new rock and roll. Or, more accurately, the old rock and roll. But it's wrapped up in so much ass-kissing right wing family values bullshit that there's a wall through which the music doesn't penetrate, it lives in its own ghetto, happy as a pig in shit, but it could be so much more.

I don't want to say this album is fantastic, but I'll say there's not one moment when you want to pick up the needle and trash it. And then you hang in there long enough to hear winners like "Boys From The South" and "Family Feud".

Country music too often plays to the lowest common denominator. When they start singing about babies and church I puke. It's like the CD should come with the minivan. The boys all wear cowboy hats and the girls wear cowboy boots and it's so inauthentic you want to dismiss it out of hand. But if you do you miss so much.

Just listen to Keith Urban's "Stupid Boy", especially the long guitar instrumental. If Jerry Garcia were still alive he'd be asking Keith to sit in.

And Miranda Lambert's "Gunpowder & Lead" rocks harder than the work of the Brooklyn shoegazers.

But too many people don't hear this music.

Now I'm not sure Pistol Annies will sell that well, because the album doesn't have the obvious big hits. That's how we've been selling albums for the last decade or two. By bait and switch. We load 'em up with singles and you find out there's nothing holding them together, they're like swiss cheese, full of holes. And then there are albums like this, collections that hang together but are minus the radio showstoppers. But it's albums like this that make us fans, make us want to go see the act live, make us want to hear what the act is up to next.

You see it comes down to music, not fame. And I can't stop listening to Pistol Annies. Because they're not working hard to convince me they're the shit, because they're not banging me over the head to pay attention. Sure, there's the hype in newspapers, the glitzy website, but they're just obscuring the music, this is good music. You could go to the gig and let your mind drift, tap your feet a bit, leave feeling like you got something you couldn't get anywhere else, that you weren't an endless cog in the money machine.

The single is "Hell On Heels". It's good, but doesn't live up to its initial promise. Starts off all swampy and moody, a slowed-down country "Gimmie Shelter", then great harmonies and a good change, but it's just a bit too sing-songy, not quite memorable enough, in other words, the song doesn't go anywhere.

But I love the aforementioned "Boys From The South". It's got the country intimacy of Neil Young's "Harvest", albeit without the attitude. It's an aural movie, a great antidote to the two-dimensional crap being forced down our throat.

And "Family Feud" may seem like an outtake from a Dixie Chicks album, but is that such a bad thing? The Chicks spoke the truth and for that they were excommunicated? Are we really so big on Bush and Iraq and Afghanistan these days? Polls say otherwise. But ain't that America, the knee-jerk reaction, the drawing of lines when we're really all in it together.

And the dirty little secret is those on the margins of both the left and right have a lot in common. They're both disillusioned with the government, mad at corporations, could what happened in the Middle East happen here?

Yup.

If we come together instead of fighting while the bad men make all the money.

There's no reason left wing liberals can't eat up Pistol Annies.

And although the trappings might lean right, the music here is positively dead center. We've all got problems, we're all trying to get along. That's what Pistol Annies are singing about.

And the music is no secret if you're a country fan, Miranda Lambert is a star.

But if they'd only take off their cowboy boots and leave their smugness at the door...

And if the city rockers pooh-poohing the "ignorant" folks down south would realize that all the real playing and singing comes from Nashville, maybe we could meet in between.

This music isn't for everybody.

But it's for a lot more people than what's being played on Top Forty.

They say rock is dead, radio stations are dropping like flies. But that's wrong, rock is flourishing, just turn on the country radio, there might be some banjos, but underneath it's all rock and roll. You'll like it.

Background

The lyrics to "Danny Boy" were written by English lawyer and lyricist Frederic Weatherly in 1910. Although the lyrics were originally written for a different tune, Weatherly modified them to fit "Londonderry Air" in 1913, when his sister-in-law in America sent him a copy.^[1] Ernestine Schumann-Heink made the first recording in 1915. Weatherly gave the song to the vocalist Elsie Griffin, who in turn made it one of the most popular songs in the new century.

History

Although penned by Englishman Weatherly, "Danny Boy" is considered to be an unofficial signature song and anthem, particularly by Irish Americans and Irish Canadians.^[2]

"Danny Boy" enjoys popularity as a funeral song but, as it is not liturgical, its suitability for funerals is sometimes contested.^[3] In 1928, Weatherly suggested that the second verse would provide a fitting requiem for the actress Ellen Terry.

Meaning

There are various theories as to the true meaning of "Danny Boy".^[4] Some listeners have interpreted the song to be a message from a parent to a son going off to war or leaving as part of the Irish diaspora. The 1918 version of the sheet music included alternative lyrics ("Eily Dear"), with the instructions that "when sung by a man, the words in italic should be used; the song then becomes "Eily Dear", so that "Danny Boy" is only to be sung by a lady". In spite of this, it is unclear whether this was Weatherly's intent, or simply a publisher's note; Weatherly did, however, acknowledge that "Danny Boy" was sung "all over the world by Sinn Feiners and Ulstermen alike", and noted that the song had "nothing of the rebel song in it, and no note of bloodshed".

According to the internet, the Leonard Cohen song Hallelujah, is the most beautiful song of all time. Internet users' favorite version of this often covered song was recorded by Jeff Buckley. Following is some information about this amazing song.

Hallelujah

"Hallelujah" is a song written by Canadian singer-songwriter Leonard Cohen, originally released on his studio album Various Positions (1984). Achieving little initial success, the song found greater popular acclaim through a cover by John Cale, which later formed the basis for a cover by Jeff Buckley. In recent years several cover versions have been performed by a large number and broad range of artists, both in recordings and in concert.

Musical composition and lyrical interpretation

"Hallelujah", in its original version, is a song in "12/8 feel", which evokes the styles of both waltz and gospel music. Written in the key of C major, the chord progression follows the lyric "it goes like this, the fourth, the fifth, the minor fall, and the major lift": C, F, G, A minor, F.^[1]

Cohen's original version contains several biblical references, most notably evoking the stories of Samson and traitorous Delilah from the Book of Judges as well as the adulterous King David and Bathsheba^[2]: "she cut your hair" and "you saw her bathing on the roof, her beauty in the moonlight overthrew you".^[1]

Following his original 1984 studio-album version, Cohen performed the original song on his world tour in 1985, but live performances during his 1988 and 1993 tours almost invariably contained a quite different set of lyrics with only the last verse being common to the two versions. Numerous artists mix lyrics from both versions, and occasionally make direct lyric changes, such as Rufus Wainwright, a Canadian-American singer, substituting "holy dark" and Allison Crowe, a Canadian singer-songwriter, substituting "Holy Ghost" for "holy dove".

Cohen's lyrical poetry and his view that "many different hallelujahs exist" is reflected in wide-ranging covers with very different intents or tones of speech, allowing the song to be "melancholic, fragile, uplifting [or] joyous" depending on the performer:^[1] The Welsh singer-songwriter John Cale, the first person to record a cover version of the song in 1991, promoted a message of "soberness and sincerity" in contrast to Cohen's dispassionate tone;^[1] The cover by Jeff Buckley, an American singer-songwriter, is more sorrowful and was described by Buckley as "a hallelujah to the orgasm";^[1][3] Crowe interpreted the song as a "very sexual" composition that discussed relationships;^[1] Wainwright offered a "purifying and almost liturgical" interpretation to the song;^[1] and Guy Garvey of the British band Elbow anthropomorphised the hallelujah as a "stately creature" and incorporated his religious interpretation of the song into his band's recordings.^[1]

Cover versions

In recent years "Hallelujah" has been performed by a large number and wide variety of artists. In addition to its first cover by Cale, the song has since been performed by almost 200 artists in various languages.^[4] Statistics from the Recording Industry Association of America (RIAA); the Canadian Recording Industry Association; the Australian Recording Industry Association; and the International Federation of the Phonographic Industry show that, prior to late 2008, more than five million copies of the song sold in compact-disc format.^{[citation needed]} It has been the subject of a BBC Radio documentary and been featured in the soundtracks of numerous films and television programs.^[5] Different interpretations of the song may include different verses, out of the over 80 verses Cohen originally wrote.^[6]

In an April 2009 CBC Radio interview, Cohen said that he finds the number of covers of his song "ironic and amusing" given that when he first wrote the song, his record company wouldn't put it out. However, he now thinks the song could benefit from a break in exposure: "... I was just reading a review of a movie called Watchmen that uses it and the reviewer said - 'Can we please have a moratorium on "Hallelujah" in movies and television shows?' And I kind of feel the same way...I think it's a good song, but I think too many people sing it."^[7][8]

John Cale

John Cale's cover first appeared on I'm Your Fan (1991), a Leonard Cohen tribute album, and later on his live album Fragments of a Rainy Season (1992). Cale's version featured vocals, piano, and lyrics that Cohen had only performed live. Cale had watched Cohen perform the song and asked Cohen to send him the lyrics.^[9] Cohen then faxed Cale fifteen pages of lyrics. Cale claims that he "went through and just picked out the cheeky verses."^[6]

Cale's version forms the basis of most subsequent performances, including Cohen's performances during his 2008–2009 world tour. It was also the version used in the film Shrek (2001) (although it did not appear on the film's soundtrack album).^[1][9]

American singer-songwriter Jeff Buckley, inspired by Cale's earlier cover, recorded one of the best-known^[10] versions of "Hallelujah" for his debut album Grace in 1994.

In 2004, Buckley's version was ranked number 259 on Rolling Stone's "The 500 Greatest Songs of All Time".^[1] The same year Time called Buckley's version "exquisitely sung," observing "Cohen murmured the original like a dirge, but ... Buckley treated the ... song like a tiny capsule of humanity, using his voice to careen between glory and sadness, beauty and pain... It's one of the great songs."^[11]

In September 2007, a poll of fifty songwriters conducted by the magazine Q listed "Hallelujah" among the all-time "Top 10 Greatest Tracks" with John Legend calling Buckley's version "as near perfect as you can get. The lyrics to Hallelujah are just incredible and the melody's gorgeous and then there's Jeff's interpretation of it. It's one of the most beautiful pieces of recorded music I've ever heard."^[12] In July 2009, the Buckley track was ranked number three on the 2009 Triple J Hottest 100 of All Time, a listener poll held every decade by the Australian radio station Triple J."^[13]

Still, Buckley's version was not an instant hit, nor did Buckley live to see the full measure of the reception his recording would ultimately have; he died in 1997. The album on which it appeared did not go Gold in the U.S. until 2002, nine years after its release. In fact, like Cohen's original, the Buckley version was never officially released as a single, and the singer's cover first charted posthumously in 2006. In March of that year, Buckley had his first national Top 10 bestseller when "Hallelujah" went to number seven in Norway. In 2007 it made the top 3 on the Swedish charts. In March 2008 it hit number one in France. In April 2008 it topped Billboard's Hot Digital Songs in the U.S., where the sudden resurgence of interest catapulted Buckley's version past both Gold and Platinum status, the RIAA certifying the digital track on April 22, 2008.^[14]

The Buckley version has been widely featured in film and television dramas, including the series The West Wing, Crossing Jordan, Without a Trace, The O.C., Scrubs, House, Criminal Minds, ER, Third Watch, Ugly Betty and LAX, and the films Feast of Love, The Edukators, Vinterkyss and Lord of War.^{[citation needed]} "Hallelujah can be joyous or bittersweet, depending on what part of it you use", Time quoted the late Buckley's publisher as saying of the track, and the magazine opined that its liberal use in some cases was "a tacit admission that neither the writers nor the actors could convey their characters' emotions as well as Buckley."^[11]

Rufus Wainwright

Canadian-American musician and singer Rufus Wainwright had briefly met Jeff Buckley and was struck by the singer, recording a tribute to him after his 1997 death. That song, "Memphis Skyline", referenced Buckley's version of "Hallelujah", which Wainwright would later record, though using piano and a similar arrangement to Cale's. Wainwright's version was featured on the album Shrek: Music from the Original Motion Picture, although it was Cale's version that was used in the film itself.^[9] The Shrek soundtrack, containing Wainwright's cover, was certified Double Platinum in the United States in 2003 as achieving sales of over two million copies.

Rufus Wainwright, his sister Martha Wainwright, and Joan Wasser performed the song in the film "Leonard Cohen: I'm Your Man".

k.d. lang

k.d. lang recorded a version of "Hallelujah" in 2004 on her album Hymns of the 49th Parallel. She has several times been chosen to sing the song at major events, such as at the Canadian Juno Awards of 2005,^[15] where her rendition "brought the audience to its feet for a two-minute ovation."^[16] Lang also sang it at the 2006 Canadian Songwriters Hall of Fame on the occasion of Cohen's induction into the Hall of Fame.^[17] Of that rendition, Cohen's partner, singer Anjani Thomas, said: "After hearing k.d. lang perform that song at the Canadian Songwriter's Hall of Fame in 2006 we looked at each other and said, 'well, I think we can lay that song to rest now! It's really been done to its ultimate blissful state of perfection'."^[18] Lang sang the song at the Opening Ceremonies of the 2010 Winter Olympic Games in Vancouver, before a claimed TV audience of 3 billion.^[19]

In 2006 the Norwegian quartet of Espen Lind, Kurt Nilsen, Alejandro Fuentes and Askil Holm released a cover of the song which became the fastest-selling hit ever in Norway, reaching #1 on VG-lista,^[20] the Norwegian singles chart, going double platinum (100K+ sales) in two weeks and eventually selling over 250,000 copies (8 x platinum).

The song remained listed on the Norwegian Top 20 for 37 weeks (week 26/2006 to week 11/2007)^[21]

The song also appears on the 2006 album Hallelujah Live, credited to Espen Lind with Kurt Nilsen, Alejandro Fuentes and Askil Holm, that also reached the top of the Norwegian albums chart.^[22]

Alexandra Burke, the winner of the fifth series of British reality television show The X Factor, released a condensed cover version of the song as a prize for her victory. It reached the Christmas Number One spot on the United Kingdom charts on 21 December 2008.

The release of Burke's cover created interest in the previous versions of the song, including a Buckley fan campaign to take Buckley's cover to the top of the Christmas chart in order to deny Burke the top spot.^[23][24] The campaign was fuelled by Jeff Buckley fans' dislike of The X Factor's commercialism and the song's arrangement,^[25][26] as well as a desire by this contingent to introduce younger music fans to Buckley's version.^[27] Burke herself was not enamoured of the choice of song, remarking "It just didn't do anything for me."^[26]

Burke's version broke a European sales record after selling over 105,000 digital downloads in just one day, breaking the previous record set by Leona Lewis. It sold 576,000 copies in its first week, becoming the fastest selling single released by a woman in the United Kingdom and the 2008 Christmas number one, while Buckley's cover charted at #2 and Cohen's original version at #36. On 28 December 2008, the UK Singles Chart listed Burke's version as the biggest selling single of the year,^[28][29] with NME announcing sales of over 1 million copies since its release.^[30] Burke's version is the 56th biggest selling single of all time in the United Kingdom.^{[citation needed]} In the UK, it has sold over 1,200,000 copies.^{[citation needed]}

Other cover versions

Bob Dylan was among the first to perform Cohen's song in concert with his earliest noted performance being in Montreal on 8 July 1988.^[31] Canadian singer-songwriter Allison Crowe recorded a critically praised version of "Hallelujah" in a single take for her album Tidings (2003). Crowe also performed the song for a national television special broadcast annually across Canada each year from 2003 through 2008.^[1] Other notable artists who have covered "Hallelujah" include Brandi Carlile, Willie Nelson, Alter Bridge (Myles Kennedy) and Bono. Bono's version, which is mostly performed as spoken-word, was included in Tower of Song, an all-star tribute to Cohen in 1995. Bon Jovi has covered the song several times in concert, including on their 2008 Live at Madison Square Garden DVD.^[32]

British singer Kathryn Williams performed the song at an open-air concert in Regent's Park,^[33] which was later released on her 2004 album Relations.^[1] Acclaimed English songwriter and singer Imogen Heap covered the song as well.^[34] Progressive rock singer/songwriter Kevin Max covered the song on his album Between the Fence & the Universe (2004). In 2005 blues singer and guitarist Popa Chubby released Big Man Big Guitar containing a live version of "Hallelujah". Rea Garvey sang a version on the soundtrack to the German romantic comedy Barfuss.^[35]

International group Il Divo released a Spanish-language adaptation on their album The Promise (2008), which topped the charts in the UK. The song was performed by singer/songwriter Damien Rice at the 2008 Rock and Roll Hall of Fame inductions when Cohen was inducted. That same year Welsh mezzo-soprano Katherine Jenkins recorded a classical-crossover version for her album Sacred Arias.^[31] Kate Voegele performed the song in character as Mia Catalano in the U.S. teen drama One Tree Hill. Also appearing on an album, her version made the Hot 100 Billboard charts and reached number 53 in the UK shortly after airing of the episode there.^[36]

Although Alexandra Burke won the fifth series of X Factor resulting in the release of her version, unreleased versions of "Hallelujah" sung by other of the show's finalists, Diana Vickers, Eoghan Quigg, and JLS, have since leaked on the Internet. Paramore covers the song as an introduction to their own song by the same title, "Hallelujah", in their live album The Final Riot! Lisa Hordijk, winner of the 2009 Dutch X-Factor released "Hallelujah" as her debut single, which went double platinum and remained at the top of the Dutch charts for ten weeks.^[37]

On April 16, 2010, the Edmonton Symphony Orchestra and the Richard Eaton Singers conducted by Jack Everly premiered a new arrangement for orchestra and chorus by Claude Lapalme.^[38] Also in 2010, the Maccabeats of Yeshiva University released Voices from the Heights, featuring an a capella version of the song to the words of the Jewish liturgy "Lecha Dodi". In May 2010 on Australia's Got Talent a version sung by 15-year-old boy Bobby Andonov led judge Dannii Minogue to declare, "Bobby, I have heard so many versions of that song, that is now my favourite version of that song and you can print that tomorrow".^[39] Tangerine Dream also covered the song in their 2010 album Under Cover - Chapter One. Neil Diamond recorded the song for his 2010 album, Dreams.

Accolades and achievements

In 2005, "Hallelujah" was named the tenth-greatest Canadian song of all time in Chart magazine's annual readers' poll.
The BBC commemorated the 25th anniversary of the first recording with an hour-long radio documentary, The Fourth, The Fifth, The Minor Fall, in which the song's history and numerous cover versions were presented and discussed.^[1]
On 21 December 2008, "Hallelujah" became the first song in 51 years^[40] to occupy the first and second positions on the UK Singles Chart; The X-Factor winner Alexandra Burke's and American singer Jeff Buckley's covers were the two highest-selling songs in the week beginning 15 December 2008. Leonard Cohen's version attained the number 36 spot in the same chart.^[41]
In the February 2009 issue of Blender, "Hallelujah" was featured as that month's "Greatest Song Ever" (a monthly feature).^[42]
